Philosophy Of Education

To examine the goals or methods and forms of education is called as philosophy of education. This term is used to denote the description of some specific pedagogical approaches.

Due to the progress in the human civilization, education came into existence which is ultimately influenced by the philosophy of life. Philosophy and education are very much interrelated therefore they can be regarded as
foundation or basis of education.

Definition of philosophy
According to Windelband the philosophy is the critical science of universal values. According to John Dewey, it is said that philosophy is achieved wisdom which would influence the conduct of life. Philosophy is not about conclusion but it is about experience which is a method of approaching the unknown to known. Philosophy is a part of science which consists of theories. Herbert Spencer is a philosopher who said that philosophy is concerned with
everything as a universal science.

Branches of philosophy
There are different branches of philosophy which are as follows:

1. Epistemology: the search which is critical which is a quest for knowledge. It is the most crucial basic branch of philosophy. It discusses validity of knowledge and the limits of knowledge.

2. Metaphysics: It is the study of reality of existence.

3. Axiology: The branch of philosophy which studies value and it is comprised of ethics, aesthetics and logic.

Philosophy of sciences

Philosophy of education means that its an approach to the theory of learning which comprises of widely accepted views on the methods of education where it can be best achieved.

Educators have comprehended that their individual philosophies about education guide them to make curriculum and structure in the classroom discussions they are more approach based.

Philosophy and education are interdependent

Due to the following reasons education is dependent on philosophy.

1. Philosophy determines the true destination towards the real education. Education is a process which needs proper guidance and supervision to reach its goal. Philosophy encompasses the goals of life and it gives the proper guidance
and supervision to education in order to achieve that goal.

2. Philosophy determines the various aspects of education. The education and philosophy are connected with each other because philosophy always influences the aspect of education.

Philosophers have also been great educationists. Philosophers like Plato, Socrates, Froebel, Tagore, Aurobindo Ghosh also spoken greatly about education.

Philosophy has always been an important guide for the planning and determination of educational aims for the children. Education is a base for philosophy because education is the dynamic side of philosophy. The plan and thoughts laid by the philosophy the application or practicability is achieved through education. Hence, philosophy analyses and lists down the principles to be followed in order to achieve the goals

Philosophy and aims of education
The values comprise the philosophy of education which in turn is an analysis of philosophy of life. Philosophy serves as a guide to reach with educational endeavour. In order to get the proper education, we have to have an aim of
education in the right direction.

Philosophy and the curriculum

Philosophy is needed to decide a curriculum. It is the wisdom put into action. The Philosophical approaches which are at present used in classrooms around the world are:

Perennialism: Which means that the main emphasis on education should be the ideas that have been followed over a period of centuries.
Essentialism: It means that an approach which considers the fact that people and things have natural and essential common characteristics which are inherent, innate and unchanging.
Progressivism: It is a theory of education that is concerned with a method called as โ€œlearning by doingโ€
Reconstructionism: It is a constant strife in the journey to create a better
society and worldwide democracy.

The above educational philosophies mainly stress on the curriculum what we ought to teach.
